INV3 Kevin Roe

Personal History

Kevin Roe hails from Rockland County, New York living in many towns and villages in the county throughout his childhood. Kevin was made a ward of the state and was moved between group homes and foster homes until the age of twelve when he finally was brought to his final foster home. He was fostered by the Cantor-Smith family for a year before he was finally adopted and made a home in Piermont, NY. He was especially close to his new grandmother, Theresa Smith, who he affectionately called Nana. He was her only grandchild and the two were instantly close. Growing up she told him stories of her late husband who had retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer in the US Coast Guard. Her husband, George, was very proud of his service and always wanted a son to follow in his footsteps.

Kevin participated in US Army JROTC while in high school and enjoyed it greatly. He graduated as a Cadet Colonel and as the Battalion’s Commanding Officer. Between his JROTC experience and the experience he read about in the late Master Chief’s journals he wanted to serve in the military and specifically the US Coast Guard. After turning seventeen he dragged his adoptive mother to the US Coast Guard recruiter where he was able to sign up for and be accepted to two very special programs within the US Coast Guard. First, the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) would allow him to attend Basic Training during the summer between his junior and senior years of high school and switch to active duty when he graduated. He was also accepted in the Annex-X Program where he would be entering as an Airman Recruit and assigned to an Air Station where he would have a rescue swimmer assigned as a mentor to prepare for Aviation Survival Technician (AST) “A”-School where he’d learn to be a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer.

After graduating from Basic Training he was promoted two paygrades thanks to his time in JROTC and his status as an honor graduate to Airman. His first assignment was at Air Station (AIRSTA) San Fransisco in Califonia where he was a non-rate assigned to the AST shop where he trained and prepared for a career as a rescue swimmer. During his time at AIRSTA San Fransisco he became qualified as a communications watchstander. During his assignment to AIRSTA San Fransisco he also attended EMT School at Training Center (TRACEN) Petaluma also in California where he became a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician.

Kevin loved being in the US Coast Guard and journaled like his idol, George, had and thought of him and his grandmother often. The Coast Guard had become the large family he always wanted to have growing up finding brothers and sisters in arms, cousins, and even those he thought of as an uncle or aunt. When his orders came for Aviation Survival Technician “A”-School he was delighted and celebrated with his shipmates at the Air Station like he’d never before. He was off to AIRSTA Elizabeth City, North Carolina to train for the career he’d always wanted.
